Tips For Managing a Spring Ant Infestation
As spring breezes in, it’s time to begin thinking about pests that become very active during this time of year. Of the more prevalent, bothersome pests in homes, ants rank right up there with the best of them. They can invade a home, seemingly overnight, and be very difficult to get rid of. They can fit through impossibly small openings; so, it can be quite a challenge to determine how they are coming in and make sure that all potential access points are sealed. Here’s what you need to know about managing a spring ant infestation.
An Ounce of Prevention and a Pound of Cure
Ants will enter a home for any number of reasons, but typically it’s because they are looking for food. If you have food on your counters (even tiny crumbs), it’s like laying out the welcome mat for ants. They will march in and take over in nothing flat. To prevent a spring ant infestation – or one during any time of the year – make sure that you take these preventative measures.
Know your enemy. Knowing what type of ant you are dealing with will help you fight it more effectively. For instance, black ants will enter a home because they are looking for food. They are drawn to starch, sugar, and meat – and will take even the tiniest crumbs.
If you see black ants trailing, you can wipe up the ants that are inside, and use a kitchen disinfectant to wipe along the pheromone trail so other ants can’t find it. If there are a lot of ants you might want to vacuum them up, but don’t empty your vacuum unless you are away from the house. Follow the trail to the nest, and treat the nest.
When a Spring Ant Infestation Requires a Professional Touch
Some species of ants, like carpenter ants and fire ants, present a little more of a challenge. In these cases it is usually recommended that a professional be called in. A pest control professional has the training, knowledge, and products to effectively treat your home and property for these and other pests.
A pest control professional knows what to look for when seeking out a carpenter ant nest or to find evidence of ant infestations in your walls. They can identify access points and help you make your home less hospitable to ants and other pests.
